I have one sibling. His name is Jesus and he is five years younger than I am. I have two much older step-brothers who are about the same age as my mom (mid-40s). I am not as close as I would like to be to my step-brothers, it mostly has to do with age and also distance; they live in Tennessee and Texas, have wives and kids, so there is a lot of gap in lifestyle and attitudes, but we get a long pretty well.
Like I mentioned, my younger brother Jesus is five years younger. He was born four days after my birthday, which I thought it was cool (if he had been a girl as the doctor said he would, and I wanted to have a little sister at the time) but I came to resent the little fellow because he took all the attention away from me. For years we celebrated our birthdays on the 12th of April since it was in between his and my birthday. It was…okay? I always wanted my birthday to be about me, and I still sort of do, but as you get older you start to realize that birthday parties and getting presents is for kids and you don't want to be seen as a kid so you put less emphasis on celebrating your birthday and acting much older.
For years my brother and I did not get along and often got into fights and screaming matches. Its what brothers do, I guess. I sometimes wonder how things would have been different if we both weren't so pigheaded and decided to get a long at an early age. We could have been like other siblings that I know; who were always there for each other and were each other's best friends. At least, that is how I saw it, but I realize I am being idealistic and that its not always like that. Our relationship is much better now. Much, much better.
